Loch Ness is located in the Scottish Highlands. It is a large, deep, freshwater loch that stretches for approximately 37 km (23 miles) southwest of Inverness and is famous across the world for the alleged sightings of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as “Nessie”.
At its northern tip, it flows into Loch Dochfour. This in turn feeds the River Ness, which flows through the Highlands capital of Inverness. At its southern extreme, you’ll find Fort Augustus – where The Lovat is located – and the River Oich. Here, it is also linked to Loch Oich, a section of the Caledonian Canal.
After Loch Lomond, Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56.4 km2 (21.8 sq mi). However, it is the largest by volume, with a deepest point of 230 m (754 ft). This is deeper than any other loch except Loch Morar, and its length is even longer than the height of London’s BT Tower, which measures 189 m (620 ft).
