Historic sites near The Lovat include:

Corrimony Chambered Cairn, Glen Urquhart

An excavated passage grave of probable Bronze Age date defined by a stone kerb and surrounded by a circle of 11 standing stones.

Glenfinnan Monument (open Apr-Oct)

The world-renowned story of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s fight for the British throne gathered momentum at Glenfinnan, where he raised the Jacobite standard and rallied his clansmen for battle. Some 70 years later, the Glenfinnan monument was built by Alexander MacDonald of Glenaladale in memory of all the clansmen who had fought for the cause. The tower is now in the custody of the National Trust for Scotland.

Fort George

Fort George is one of the finest examples of 18th century military engineering you’ll find anywhere in the British Isles. This vast garrison fortress was begun in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden (1746), which crushed the final Jacobite Rising. It took over 20 years to complete and in the event it was never attacked. It remains virtually unaltered today and still serves as an important military base.

Cawdor Castle (May-Oct)

Cawdor Castle, perhaps the most romantic Castle in the Highlands, features in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The medieval tower and drawbridge are intact and generations of art lovers are responsible for the eclectic collections of paintings, tapestries, furniture and books in the castle

Currently owned by The Dowager Countess Cawdor (the same family have lived in the castle for over 600 years), the Castle has three shops, a restaurant, a snack bar and a golf course. In addition, it is fast becoming renowned for its organic food festival on the last Saturday in September.
