Cultural life in the Highlands
The Scottish Highlands is the perfect place for outdoor activities and offers lot of ways to keep physically active, however, sometimes we need to feed our soul too.
Eden court is located in Inverness and is 45 minutes from The Lovat hotel. The summer season at Eden Court starts in May 2018 and the program offers something for every taste.
The program is rich in all kinds of performances, so I decided to choose one from each category. You can see a full list on Eden Court’s website.
Sunshine on Leith
This musical attracted my attention because the plot is based in Scotland and it’s interesting to get to know the country from different perspectives.
The essential Scottish musical returns to Eden Court for the first time since 2010 in a brand-new production. Follow the highs and lows of Ally and his friend Davy as they return home to Leith from the army. Families, friendships and life are not plain sailing in this funny and moving story about love and life.
With stunning songs including I’m Gonna Be (500 miles), Sunshine on Leith, Letter From America, and I’m On My Way, this energetic piece of musical theatre is loved by audiences and critics alike.

Ballet Black – Double Bill
My love for ballet has been with me ever since I can remember and if you appreciate it as much as I do – here’s something for you. The performance mixes classical and contemporary dance.
Led by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho, this company celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent, showcasing technique, precision and grace in specially commissioned pieces.
As part of their latest double bill, renowned British choreographer Cathy Marston, choreographs a new narrative ballet for the Company. Based on Can Themba’s South African fable The Suit, this is the first dance adaptation of the affecting short story.
Completing the evening is Arthur Pita’s Olivier nominated A Dream Within a Midsummer Night’s Dream, described as ‘charming and hilarious’ by Dance Europe magazine. The production mixes classical and contemporary to distil the essence of Shakespeare’s comedy, unfolding to an eclectic soundtrack that includes Eartha Kitt, Barbara Streisand and Yma Sumac. Performing it, ‘the company have never looked better’ (Independent).

The description gives the impression that adults will also enjoy this lovely story about animals and our own emotions.
Created by Greg Sinclair, a co-production with Perth Theatre, ANIMALS is a show about… animals. Big ones, little ones, wild ones, tame ones. It’s also a show about us, and our emotions. Big ones, little ones, wild ones, tame ones.
From the joy of delivering a new lamb with your own hands, to the pain of losing your pet dog, and the confusion of discovering your favourite cow is in love with a tractor! ANIMALS explores how animals help us figure stuff out.
Using real and imagined stories collected from 6 year-olds – live music, dance and film is interweaved into a celebration of our unique relationship with animals.

Russian String Orchestra – Misha’s Gang
Classical music always feeds the soul, doesn’t it?
Founded by Misha Rachlevsky in 1991, and comprising some of Russia’s finest young string players, the orchestra has toured extensively to 26 countries in Europe, North and South America and Asia. They have produced 36 CDs, winning numerous international awards, including Critics Choice in London’s Gramophone, Critics Choice in New York Times and the Diapason d’Or award in France.
Equally at home in the world’s great concert halls and in more intimate small-medium sized theatres, and with compositions ranging from the most profound to the most light-hearted, the warmth and high energy of the orchestra create engaging and addictive performances that stay with the listener long after the last note has been played.

The Royal Ballet – Swan Lake
One of the best-loved and most admired of all classical ballets.
Swan Lake has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. This Season The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. While remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text, Scarlett will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane.
Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night.

The runaway hit of the Edinburgh International Festival 2016, a compelling fable for our modern world, Wind Resistance is written and performed by multi-award winning singer-songwriter, Karine Polwart.
Every autumn, two-and-a-half thousand pink-footed geese fly from Iceland and Greenland to winter at Fala Flow, a protected peat-bog south-east of Edinburgh. From this windy plateau, Karine surveys the surrounding landscape through history, birdlore and personal memoir. Ideas of sanctuary, maternity, Scottish football legend, conservation, and medieval medicine all take flight, in a spellbinding alchemy of song, story and potent lighting and electro-acoustic effects.
Nominated for Best New Play, Best Production, Best Director and winner of Best Music & Sound at the CATS (Critic’s Awards for Theatre in Scotland) 2017, Karine was also shortlisted for Best Actor in the Sunday Herald Culture Awards.)
