Fort Augustus Medical Centre
The importance of the local community and its services…
In October 2015, a fire ripped through the medical centre in Fort Augustus leaving the local community without a GP. Because of the damage, the centre could not be used so the medical centre closed completely.
FAGCC, the Fort Augustus and Glenmoriston Community Company, held a public meeting in January 2016. The purpose of this meeting was to seek the community’s views on the ownership and development of a new facility. The community backed the decision as otherwise it would have meant that local residents would have a 64-mile round trip to see a GP in either Fort William or Drumnadrochit.
The decision resulted in safeguarding the GP service for the area and after receiving the communities backing, FAGCC secured funding whilst co-ordinating with the NHS. The £1 million build started in May 2018, consisting of 4 consulting rooms and 2 treatment rooms which is double the previous medical centre.
With community cheer, the new Cill Chuimein medical centre opened its doors in April 2019 thanks to FAGCC and all involved. For all information on Cill Chuimein medical centre, follow the link: http://www.fortaugustusgp.org/index.asp
