New Year… New You?
It is believed that New Year’s resolutions date back as far as 4,000 years. The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first to start the ‘new year new you’ mantra in mid-March when their crops were planted. Though, I’m sure their resolutions would be very different to the resolutions of today!
In ancient Rome, Julius Caesar changed the calendar to establish January 1st as the beginning of the new year circa 46 B.C. The Romans offered sacrifices and promises of good conduct to the gods going into the new year. Early Christians used this time of year to look back at their past mistakes and think of how they can create a better future.
Today’s resolutions are now more promises to one’s self rather than to the gods. They are mainly self-improvements which can sometimes be hard to follow through with.
