Last week, we attended the Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality Handover Event in Glasgow for Scottish Apprenticeship Week. The handover event was for the third group of apprentices who have been taking part in the programme to reflect upon their first six-month experience, where they have been working within Housekeeping.

The Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality is an industry-led Hospitality Apprenticeship programme that aims to nurture and develop highly skilled and talented young people and to inspire them for the Scottish hospitality industry. By offering the chance to gain experience and a qualification through working within some of Scotland’s leading hotels, the programme is much sought after and extremely beneficial.

At The Lovat, we are actively involved in The Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality, taking on our own apprentices in the Hotel. Apprentices can shadow members of the team to pick up skills and learn how to perform various tasks. Our apprentices learn from all departments in the Hotel, from housekeeping, to the kitchen and the bar.

We have had the pleasure of having Morven McBean working with us as part of the Scottish Apprenticeship since September last year. Morven has said that her “whole life was turned around in September 2016” after securing her apprenticeship, so we can appreciate just how much this opportunity means to people.

After hearing about the experiences and opinions that some of the apprentices have had over the last six months at the Handover Event, we definitely think that this programme is worth while, and will help to improve and strengthen the hospitality industry by shaping the next generation. As well as this, the programme clearly helps develop the individual on a personal level by building confidence and independence.

Skills Development Scotland has said: “The Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality is very much a benchmark for how MA programmes should run across Scotland.” At The Lovat we definitely agree! We think that every industry should be getting on board and following in the footsteps of this fantastic opportunity!
