Your Essentials for the Scottish Highlands
I thought it would be helpful to give you some top essentials to bring with you to the Highlands. Most of these essentials are useful throughout the year, no matter the season. Whether you already have your trip planned or you are still just thinking about it, these are the items you should include on your list.
1. Waterproof clothes
To quote Billy Connolly “I hate all those weathermen, too, who tell you that rain is bad weather. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing, so get yourself a sexy raincoat and live a little.” I think it’s a good advice he’s giving and it says it all. A waterproof jacket is the number one of my essentials. It rains a lot in Scotland and the weather can change every 15 minutes.
2. Midge Spray/Repellent
Don’t let Scottish midges spoil your outdoor enjoyment! But what are the midges? Sometimes, people confuse the name mosquitoes and midges. Mosquitoes are much much bigger than midges. Nevertheless, the small midges like to bite and leave red, itchy spots on your skin. So be sure to buy a midge spray or repellent.
3. Walking/Hiking boots
This might seem obvious but it’s really important to have comfortable and waterproof boots. The Highlands offers a lot of hiking opportunities and no matter what difficulty level you’ll choose, be it even a regular walk in the forest, be sure you have good boots.
The Scottish Highlands is the place where you don’t need to look for the views. Anywhere you go, you can enjoy the scenery. Therefore, my 4th essential is a camera as you’ll get plenty of photo opportunities! It’s even worth to consider an extra battery pack.
There you go – my top 4 essentials for travelling in the Scottish Highlands!
